Let's have a "Relationshop" — A Word That Always Resonates...
Some words arrive quietly, and then stay with you.
I remember hearing Mary Portas use the word "relationshop" many years ago, and feeling something settling into place. It wasn’t flashy or clever. It simply felt true to me. It gave a name to something I’d always believed in, but had never been able to quite articulate.
A relationshop isn’t about selling more. It’s about knowing the people who walk into my shop.
The Stories That Walk Through the Door
Every day at The Coastal Boutique, people bring their lives with them when they walk through the door. Sometimes it’s obvious — a holiday coming up, a birthday, a long-awaited weekend away. Other times it reveals itself slowly, through conversation and familiarity.
We hear about cruises and coastal cottages they have let for the week, about grandchildren’s weddings and long lunches out with friends. We hear about what feels comfortable now, what perhaps doesn’t anymore, and what someone wants to feel like when they get dressed in the morning.
These aren’t interruptions to the day. They are the day.
And over time, those conversations shape how we work, what we buy, and how we can help.
Why Being Present Still Matters
In a world where so much shopping is done in a hurry, often alone, there’s something grounding about being present on the high street. Opening the door each morning, recognising faces, offering an honest opinion when it’s needed — and sometimes gently steering someone away from something that just isn’t quite right means being present still matters.
And trust grows quietly like those moments. Not through slogans or easy promises, but through consistency. Through being reliable. Through showing up, being seen, week after week, and doing what you said you would do.
That kind of trust can’t be rushed — and it can’t be automated.
Clothes for Real Life, Not Just Occasions
Most of the time, people aren’t looking for something extraordinary. They’re looking for something that works. Clothes that pack easily for a holiday, that feel good on the body, that don’t need constant adjustment or second-guessing.
If we can make someone’s life a little easier by helping them feel prepared, comfortable and quietly confident — then we’ve done something worthwhile.
Those moments, small as they may seem, give meaning to what we do.
Finding Purpose in the Everyday
There’s a deep sense of purpose in being part of people’s routines and their special moments. In knowing that something chosen here will be worn on a long walk by the sea, or at a café abroad, or simply at home on an ordinary Tuesday.
A relationshop has a role to play. Not loudly, not dramatically — but steadily.
It’s a place where people feel known. Where honesty matters. Where relationships come first.
What the Word Means to Me Now
After all this time, when I think about that word again — relationshop — it still feels right.
It reminds me that what we’re building isn’t just a business, but a relationship with the people who take the time to walk through our door. That's what grows over time, that "Relationship within the Shop" From one conversation, one visit, one shared story at a time. And in a world that often moves too fast, that feels like something worth holding on to.
